From The Publisher:

What is Scripture? What did it mean in the past and what sense does it make now? What is its truth? How is it related to God, to communities of believers, to academic disciplines, and to current concerns? How is biblical scholarship related to past insights and modern methods? Such complex questions are addressed in fruitful new ways in Reading Texts, Seeking Wisdom.

Offering a rare, stimulating dialogue between truly outstanding biblical scholars and theologians, the book explores how the study of Scripture and the work of theology have come together in the past — in Judaism, in the early church, during the Middle Ages, in early modernity, and in the twentieth century. All of the authors use the motif of wisdom as a meaningful way to unpack theoretical and methodological issues, as well as to examine specific texts relevant to the discussion. Their subject matter ranges broadly and includes a debate about how wisdom relates to faith and reason and a presentation of Jesus as “the wisdom of God.” There is also intensive engagement with biblical texts: a Jewish scholar faces the challenge of genocidal texts in Deuteronomy; the book of Jonah is seen as a “way of wisdom”; two contributors look at the opening of Colossians; and one explores the significance of Jesus as interpreter of Scripture at the end of Luke’s Gospel.

Originating from the prestigious Lady Margaret 500th Lectures held at the University of Cambridge in 2002, Reading Texts, Seeking Wisdom will profit teachers, pastors, students, and general readers with a keen interest in the methods and challenges of biblical interpretation and theological reflection.
