Theology of the Old Testament: Testimony, Dispute, Advocacy Book & CD-Rom edition
Walter Brueggemann
Description
From The Publisher:
In this powerful book, Walter Brueggemann moves the discussion of Old Testament theology beyond the dominant models of previous generations.
Brueggemann focuses on the metaphor and imagery of the courtroom trial in order to regard the theological substance of the Old Testament as a series of claims asserted for Yahweh, the God of Israel. This provides a context that attends to pluralism in every dimension of the interpretive process and suggests links to the plurality of voices of our time.
The concern for process and interaction explains the three terms of the subtitle:
- Testimony: the character of theological claim in the Old Testament must make its way amid counterassertions
- Dispute: There are competing offers of truth, as in any critical legal case.
- Advocac:: The role of testimony is to advocate a rendering of truth that is strongly in conflict with other versions of reality.
Brueggemann focuses on the processes of theological assertion, on utterance rather than historical questions, and seeks to see Jewish and Christian theological interpretation as parallel operations. He takes seriously the "down side" testimony to God as well as Israel's positive claims for God.
