Description

From The Publisher:

When the twentieth century began, Jerusalem was an outpost of the Ottoman Empire, a provincial town ruled from Constantinople. As the century closes, it is a major city, the capital of an independent nation, and center of worship for three world religions.

The story of those hundred years, from the twilight of Turkish rule to the advent of the twentieth-first century, is always fascinating, often tragic, and vital to our understanding of the Middle East. Picking up where he left off in his acclaimed Jerusalem: Rebirth of a City, Martin Gilbert offers a vivid and authoritative history rooted in contemporary sources and scholarship as well as his intimate knowledge of the city and its people.

Here is Jerusalem's dramatic modern story, including the city's liberation from the Turks by the British in 1917, the Balfour Declaration with its promise of a Jewish National Home, the battle of Jerusalem in 1948, the creation of the State of Israel, the division of the city, the Six-Day War of 1967, and today's uneasy yet hopeful peace accords with the Palestinians.
